Taster's Table 'Mississippi Soul Food' (Culinary Event / listening to the Mississippi Queen's blues collection, on Vinyl)

Front Porch proudly presents, our first ever, Taster’s Table, a culinary experience, of Mississippi ‘soul food’. This new concept, was created, to provide an authentic, culinary experience, of what one might have, down South, eating this food, in the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

This is food served ‘family style’, brought out in mismatched bowls, and serving platters, and passed around the table, to all guests, within your group, just like you might, at ya’ Mamma’s house.

This is a set menu, with reservations required. Table seating is within the ‘restaurant side’ dining room. Full service drink menu will be available. The Mississippi Queen will be playing some blues, from her vinyl collection.

I am the owner of Front Porch, and the self proclaimed, self appointed, ‘Mississippi Queen’. I come from the backwoods on south, south, Mississippi, about an hour, or so, to the northeast, of New Orleans, a place so deep in the woods, my Mamma used to say, ‘we had to pump the sunshine in’.

It’s an area, surrounded by low lying regions, of swamplands, bayous, and of course, the Gulf of Mexico, to the very south, and, the Mississippi Delta region, to the northwest. This area is well known as a culinary hotbed for ‘soul food’.

As we know, soul food originated with rural, poor folks, out of times of struggles, and strife, slavery, and poverty. Soul food came about, as a necessary means, of feeding one’s family, of putting food on that table, and it had to be done, with little, to no means.

I came up like this. I only know how to make ‘soul food’. Soul food is comfort food. I never referred to it, as such, coming up. It was just what we made, and what we ate, and what we knew. I have been wanting, and needing, to lean into my deep, Mississippi roots, and make the food, that’s next to my own soul, and make the food, how I know, it is, to be made.

Thing is, I’m often making food ‘in volume’, and sometimes, ‘as per requests’, which means I skip over certain dishes, just because they become too labour intensive, at a certain volume. So, with those thoughts in mind, I have come up with an idea, that will allow me, the opportunity, to make some of my down home, backwoods, ‘Mississippi Soul Food’, for a limited number of guests.

I invite ya’ll, to please join me, as a Taster, at my Table, to enjoy some Mississippi Soul Food, in an authentic, kind of way.

I’m gonna play some blues, for ya’ll, from my vinyl collection, with intent, of creating a culinary experience, for ya’ll to enjoy. This will give me, that opportunity, and outlet, to be that Southern woman, cooking all day, just like my Granny did, and welcome ya’ll, end of the day, to my table, to sit back, to taste, relax, enjoy, the food, and most importantly, to comfort your soul.
